A Cinematic Journey through Civil Rights: Unveiling 'The March' Exhibit In-Person

We are thrilled to extend an invitation to you all for an enlightening and engaging event that showcases a remarkable piece of civil rights cinema, The March and a new physical exhibit at the University of Oregon Libraries.

Your hosts for the evening will include a dedicated team of distinguished academics, researchers, designers, and writers:

  • Kate Conley, Editorial Content & Communications Specialist, UO Libraries
  • David Frank, Professor of Rhetoric, Clark Honors College
  • Franny Gaede, Director of Digital Scholarship Services, UO Libraries
  • Mandi Garcia, Creative Content and Communication Specialist, UO Libraries
  • Sherri Jones, Assistant Adminstrator of Education, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
  • Joie Littleton, Museum Education Assistant, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
  • Linda Long, Curator of Manuscripts, UO Libraries
  • Dan Miller, Associate Professor, School of Journalism and Communication

The event will commence with brief introductions from David Frank, Joie Little, and Sherri Jones introducing The March project and set the stage for the rest of the afternoon.

Franny Gaede will offer a brief reflection on the importance of digital scholarship and exhibits, providing a modern perspective on this historical narrative. Kate Conley, Mandi Garcia, and Linda Long will give us a peek into the making of the new physical exhibit for The March and the role of the university's archival collections.

We will have the pleasure of screening The March in its entirety, a 30 minute film carefully restored by the National Archives.

Following the screening, Dr. Dan Miller, a renowned scholar of civil rights films, will share his reflections on The March and its place in the realm of civil rights cinema. His comments will provide a unique lens through which to view and appreciate this significant documentary.

Moreover, we're excited to have Dr. Miller's students from his Human Rights and Cinema class join us. They will have the opportunity to discuss the film and share their evolving understanding and appreciation of civil rights documentaries.

This event promises to be an enriching academic experience, blending history, cinema, and exhibits physical and digital. We hope to see you there for an afternoon of learning, discussion, and reflection on an important chapter of civil rights history.
