Coffee + Data && Code (in-person & online)

Coffee + Data && Code (in-person & online) In-Person / Online

An informal and space for presentations and conversations about topics in data science! People of all skill levels and backgrounds attend to explore interesting topics, learn new tips and tricks and get to know other people interested in coding. We will be meeting in-person in the Sofa area of the DREAM Lab in Knight Library. Coffee and cookies will be provided. Attendees will also have the option to join via Zoom.

We start the event with someone giving a short example of a project they have been working on or demonstrating something they have recently learned. Then the floor is open for anyone to introduce themselves, share what they have been working on, and anything they would like help with. You are also welcome to attend to listen and participate without presenting. We will email registrants a week in advance the topic for the following week; feel free to register for the entire term but only join for topics that interest you.

This is an opportunity to learn new data analysis and programming skills and meet other people working on exciting projects.

Topics:

  • Jan 26th: In honor of the WiDS Datathon, we will be discussing the process of registering for the competition on Kaggle and looking over the competition dataset. Feel free to join us at the coding circle afterwards, where we will discuss possible transformations that might allow for better analysis and explore the cancer codes associated with the dataset.
  • Feb 2nd: no Coffee & Code (it's a book group week) but join us at the coding circle for more discussion of the WiDS Datathon data set, including a discussion of continuous and categorical variables, other issues with the data that might affect the analysis, and the kinds of models that might best fit the data set.
  • Feb 9th: Feb 9th: In honor of the WiDS Datathon, we will present a brief lecture on beginner techniques for machine learning model evaluation, then open the discussion of model development and evaluation to the group. The topics covered should be of interest to those encountering machine learning for the first time whether or not they choose to participate in the WiDS Datathon. Feel free to join us at the coding circle afterwards.
