Data Bookclub: The Cultural Logic of Computation

Data Bookclub: The Cultural Logic of Computation In-Person / Online

Join us this Spring as we explore the effects of computers on society with “The Cultural Logic of Computation” by David Golumbia. With over a decade of experience as a software designer, Golumbia delves into the intricate web of historical and cultural influences that shape our understanding of technology. By revealing how computers often reinforce existing power structures rather than challenging them, he challenges the prevailing narrative that computers are inherently transformative and liberating forces.

Get ready to question assumptions and rethink your perspective on the role of computers in daily life. Blending programming insights with literary and cultural theory, this book offers a counterbalance to the uncritical optimism that has long surrounded modern technology in our society.

Participate in the conversation every other Friday from 1-2pm in the DREAM Lab, over coffee and treats, or via zoom. We would love to have you take part in our discussions, even if you are unable to complete the reading every week. “The Cultural Logic of Computation” is available for free as a PDF through the library.
