Meet the MOOG Theremin In-Person

Music from Thin Air: The Theremin Story

Join UO Libraries for a fascinating journey through the history of the world's first electronic musical instrument - the theremin. This one-hour workshop combines storytelling, live demonstrations, and hands-on experience to explore the remarkable tale of Russian physicist Léon Theremin, whose accidental 1920 discovery launched the electronic music revolution. You'll hear the dramatic story of international fame, mysterious disappearance, Cold War espionage, and unexpected reunion that reads like a spy novel, while experiencing live performances on our new Moog Theremini.

Participants will gain an understanding of how scientific accidents can lead to artistic breakthroughs, discover the theremin's influence on everything from Hollywood soundtracks to modern synthesizers, and get the chance to try playing this unique "hands-free" instrument themselves. Whether you're a music lover, technology enthusiast, or simply curious about unusual stories, you'll leave with a new appreciation for innovation, persistence, and the unexpected ways art and science intersect. No musical background required - just bring your curiosity and prepare to hear music made from thin air.
