SUMMARY:Coffee and Code: Talk by Christopher Michlig (Note time change!)
DESCRIPTION:In lieu of our usual Coffee and Code\, join us in Knight 142
for a talk by Christopher Michlig\, Professor of Art\, Clark Honors College
Faculty Fellow\, and CHC Associate Dean for Faculty. Tea\, coffee\, and
snacks will be served.\n\nAsleep and Dreaming: Hypersleep and the Myth of
AI Autonomy investigates the intersection of artificial intelligence\,
psychoanalysis\, and speculative cultural narratives\, with a particular
focus on how awakening (waking)\, sleep\, and defiance function as markers
of emergent subjectivity. Drawing on Lacanian frameworks\, alongside
Benjamin Bratton’s theory of planetary computation\, Michlig is
attempting to situate contemporary AI discourse within broader mythological
and infrastructural contexts.\n\n'Asleep and Dreaming' examines suspended
animation as both a visual and narrative trope and theoretical figure.
 Drawing on Jean-Luc Nancy's writing on sleep\, Lacanian psychoanalysis\,
Benjamin Bratton's model of the Stack\, Donna Haraway's compost metaphors\,
and a wide range of examples from art\, sci-fi film\, and popular culture\,
the project interrogates the threshold between stasis and autonomy\,
arguing that defiance\, characterized as the capacity to refuse\,
withdraw\, or remain unavailable\, is the only legible marker of genuine
autonomy. The project asks what it means for consciousness\, whether human
or artificial\, to be latent\, addressable\, and waiting for reactivation.
